Embrapa continue researching conventional seed

The euphoria about GM crops will not make the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) set aside the exploration and production of conventional varieties. Proof that the decision is on the right is the demand for seed of the private company for producers of Paraguay. According to Linnaeus Domit, a researcher at Embrapa Soja, in the 1999/00 crop varieties Embrapa dominated about 50% of crops in the neighboring country. With the arrival of genetically modified varieties, the country has almost completely replaced conventional crops by GM, so that the current crop seeds from Embrapa not reach 5% in the Paraguayan market."The issue is that some pests become resistant and realize that there is already a greater demand for Paraguayan producers to reintroduce our conventional varieties," he said. He points out that in Argentina, where about 95% of the crops are genetically modified, some pests are already showing resistance to glyphosate, but no conventional seeds that could be used to replace the GM. "This is an advantage that Brazil has. We can replace crops genetically modified by conventional cases of resistance because we have stocks of these varieties," said Domit. Even if keeping the market conventional seed, Embrapa is to market a new development that may please the producers of soybeans. The traditional variety Embrapa 48, more than ten years in the market and well accepted by producers from the Southeast and the country will win the GM version. Domit not needed when the range will be available in the market, but it is being presented to farmers in Rural Show Show, which runs until next Friday.
