"The ministry follows an agenda to prepare agriculture for the future, but this may not only from the government. We need everyone involved, directly or indirectly, to promote agribusiness in its importance to the economy, "said Stephan, at the opening of the 31st Seminar Agribusiness Export (AgroEx) in Londrina.
The minister highlighted as the main item of this agenda applied scientific research to develop new production technologies. He pointed out that even with the work of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and State research institutions, we need more investments in research to advance and become more efficient. "We can bring biotechnology and nanotechnology to agriculture," exemplified.
The defense plant and animal health was the second point raised by the Minister as strategic to the advancement of agriculture. "The world is increasingly demanding and rigorous in terms of quality of product that will consume," he said. He noted that health issues can cause economic loss to an exporting country, citing the case of foot and mouth disease in Mato Grosso do Sul, in 2005. "We lost several markets and, even with the recovery of some of them still can not reopen other large, such as Japan," he lamented.
"Comfortable situation" - Despite the problems faced in the past, he believes that Brazil is now in a situation "comfortable" in relation to other importing nations. "All the problems we had with the United States, Russia, European Union, China and Chile are practically resolved. But this is an area which we can not ignore, "he warned.
The advance in foreign trade is also among the priorities identified by Stephanes. "Our job is to constantly work on opening new markets and promotion of Brazilian products abroad, so that our farmers to increase income," he said. The minister said further that the action can not be directed only to items of great importance in the Brazilian export basket, but for other niche markets, such as honey, rum and organic products.
Infrastructure - Stephanes said the logistics suitable for agricultural trade as an item of continuous debate. "The Brazilian farmer is efficient" inside the gate, "but when it comes out, there are huge distances to transport soybeans, for example, loss of income due to lack of an adequate infrastructure," he said. He said the issues are already being studied and believes that the Program to Accelerate Growth 2 (CAP), under development, most of the bottlenecks to be resolved.
